Hello and welcome to another edition of My First Time: Reviews by K-Pop Virgins!
We’ll be tapping our friends, boyfriends, and colleagues who have never seen, nor have any interest in K-pop, to write reviews and break-downs of our favorite music videos.
We can sometimes take our fandom way too seriously. This feature is meant to help remind us that part of what we love about K-pop is that it’s not for everyone, and it’s also completely ridiculous.
This edition is a little different from past reviews. It’s submitted by my dear friend Geoff, who is a wonderful person and not nearly as bro-y as he seems with his protein shake. Fun fact: he is the technical manager and adviser for this very site that you are currently enjoying! So if the server ever goes down, it’s all his fault. Where was I? Oh right, it’s different! Because it’s in video form! Geoff decided that it would be fun to record himself the very first time he ever watched a k-pop video. So he got home from the gym, geared up SNSD‘s “I Got a Boy,” and had his mind (and probably his penis) completely blown.
Watch it below and keep scrolling for a short write up on his thoughts! Enjoy!
Girls’ Generation‘s “I Got a Boy” is very pink. Scratch that, it’s just colorful. The colors set fire to my eyes.
It’s dynamic, constantly changing. They go from a pillow fight on a bed to dancing in the streets of a Willy Wonka-like village to droppin’ dat azz and rapping. It’s a constant back and forth.
The English is fuckin’ amazing. They sound like native speakers! I think I’m gonna enroll in a speech class at my nearest community college.
My God, the colors. I’ll dream in pink and purple tonight.
The music itself was super catchy. The rap section rocked. They could’ve been rapping about a velociraptor choking on Italian sausage for all I care.
I enjoyed this. I will listen to it again. Well, technically, I’ve already listened to it like 6 times. Pretty sure my roommate is questioning my sexuality, but I don’t care.
So many colors.
Off to listen to more SNSD.
