Gangnam Style Makes it to the Ballroom

This past Monday and Tuesday evenings on ABC‘s Dancing with the Stars – All Stars it was Guilty Pleasure Week. Each star chose a song they thought of as their guilty pleasure. For example, dancing a tango to Brittney Spears‘ Toxic and a waltz to So This is Love from Cinderella. Every couple had to dance an individual dance and a group dance (two groups of 4 couples each).

I won’t go into what happened on Monday. But on Tuesday was Team Gangnam Style‘s night. The stars and their professional dancer partners did their freestyle group dance to the sounds of what else but the song of the moment, Psy‘s Gangnam Style. The group, consisting of Kirstie Alley, Emmitt Smith, Kelly Monaco and Gilles Marini, mixed elements of ballroom dancing with choreography from Psy’s video.

The result? Well, watch for yourselves:

Although it was extremely disturbing to see Kirstie Alley in that outfit, and the insane, out of sync dancing, the performance was to quote Carrie Ann Inaba, “a hot mess.” They still received a 27 out of 30 score. Not bad, all barely-there ballroom technique considered.

Gilles Marini dancing wearing just a towel was the highlight of the evening for me.

Personally, this performance was probably the most fun to watch group dance I’ve seen in 15 seasons. Yes, I’ve been watching it since Kelly Monaco won that first mirror ball back in 2005. I admit to loving the show and loving ballroom dancing. Makes me sad I haven’t been able to practice it in years. I’m not ashamed. I make no apologies. Go ahead, laugh.
