Ga In has always been one of Kpop’s most overtly sexual female celebs, and no doubt that image is what led her to be one of her group’s most popular members. Let’s face it the girl does fine with a group of sexy male backup dancers, hot pants, and a fresh layer of black eyeliner. I can’t say I’ve always been a fan of Ga In’s because I honestly wasn’t but my opinion of her as an artist has changed.
Brown Eyed Girls’ maknae, Ga In, made her solo comeback with the release of her 2nd album, “Talk About S.” and if the album’s subject matter wasn’t clear from the cover photo, the MV for her title song “피어나 (Bloom)” makes it crystal. The music video has created quite a buzz among fans since its release because of its 19+ or R rating, due to some steamy, and controversial sex scenes.
When I first went to watch this video I skimmed it, and as soon as I saw the bed scene I was out! However, after reading about the video being super sexual, and seeing opinions all over the web about it I took another stab at it, and after watching this music video from beginning to end I was surprised, not only by Ga In, but also by my reaction. I actually LOVED this song, AND the MV.
I am NO fan of being raunchy, inappropriate, and outright slutty, but “피어나 (Bloom)” was none of those things. Around the web Ga In has received some criticism from my fellow Kpop lovers about that, but I just cannot agree. This video doesn’t deserve to be lumped in with MVs like, Hyun Ah’s “Bubble Pop” Rania’s “Dr. Feel Good” or Troublemaker’s “Troublemaker” because unlike those videos that were hypersexual simply to get more attention, “피어나 (Bloom)” has a message, or meaning to it. Plus Ga In is not a minor.
As we all know by now, “피어나 (Bloom)” is about S-E-X, sexuality, and not to be cliché, but love. It wasn’t about meeting some guy in a club, or on the streets and wanting to make out or hop into bed with him, it was about a man, and woman who love each other, and sex was their ultimate expression of it. When she (Ga In) is away from him she can’t help but think about him, and fantasize about him, hence the much talked about kitchen scene.
When they finally reunite they want to be together, and with each other despite criticism, opposition, and pointing fingers.
What do I care about what others think?
Who is that person who keeps whispering?
You are the universe that I chose
Will you hold me?
Would you?
So I can hide in you
Never before in Kpop have I seen sexy be portrayed like this. Until now idol stars exemplified sexy as super mini dresses, and skirts, hot pants, grinding, spreading legs, grabbing crotches, and all that other stuff. Though she didn’t shy away from the revealing clothing, Ga In comes in and shows her fans sexy is not just what you wear, but what you feel when you’re with another person that you love, and loves you back.
