My First Time: Derion Experiences GD’s “One of a Kind”

Welcome to the second edition of My First Time: Reviews by K-Pop Virgins.  We’ll be tapping our friends, boyfriends, and colleagues who have never seen, nor have any interest in K-pop, to write reviews and break-downs of our favorite music videos.

We can sometimes take our fandom way too seriously. This feature is meant to help remind us that part of what we love about K-pop is that it’s not for everyone, and it’s also completely ridiculous.

This edition is one I really love because the moment I saw G-Dragon’s “One of a Kind” MV I immediately thought of my sassy southern black friend Derion.  He’s got a punchline for everything and this video is full of potential punchlines.  He’s never seen a k-pop video before, much less one crazy as this, so take a gander at his break down below and leave a comment to tell us what YOU think!

0:05 Wooaaahh…did that baby Lil Wayne have with that Asian lady grow up already?? And I thought it was a son.

0:15 Oh this is a guy!!! Dude how hard is to be gangsta in eyeliner… and so much of it?

0:20 I almost wish I knew what he was saying because “One of A Kind” aren’t enough words to describe all of this happening! Its like a GaGa Weezy plane crash over a South Korean circus.

0:25 His braids remind me of how my Asian co-worker says “Yeyo” (Yellow) …HILARIOUS! (We cool though, no racism just funny as hell.)

0:30 G luv da kids! LOL Are those Lil Wayne’s too? I kid.

0:42 He rides the beat pretty clean, taking him a little more seriously at this point as a hip hop fan. Still almost want to know what he is saying.

0:40 Rockin the Js (Jordans)… looks like Concords or Space jams… awesome! But how you are you going have a treble clef at the end of a line up? And we all know ain’t none of them 7 feet tall!

0:50 Hey now, more English. I can dig it.

1:05 Dancing female flight attendants fix everything… just saying.

1:35 Eating the beat up again, dope… if I only I knew what he was saying. *Makes no efforts to get translation*

1:38 Cat in the Hat lookin’ ass. His style is all over the place, but I think I’m starting to get it.

2:05 Please insert gender here. Does that make him “Two of a Kind”?

2:21 What are you doing back there?? Can you just let the bear do his bear thing sheesh.

2:30 Work it out na. I actually like that little dance. *attempts to imitate*

2:29 Hold up! Knee-highs homie? …with Wingtip shoes!!! Sleeeezy.

2:45 He would have blouses instead of shirts…SMH. That’s right Venus and Serena all dat shit!

Final thoughts: Very interesting vid, one of a kind to say the least! The quality and production was actually great. He must be one of the more popular artists in KPop. This piece was very different, yet still entertaining. Not extremely far off from some of the videos I see from certain American artist such as Lil Wayne, Nicki Minaj, and Lady Gaga, and definitely crosses some gender lines. The beat was very good, but personally would not switch to this from my beloved American Rap or Hip Hop where most dudes remain blouseless.

Thanks for rating this! Now tell the world how you feel –
