Has South Korean K-pop infiltrated North Korea? Well, maybe the North Korean idea of k-pop?
On various online message boards, people have been posting video clips of a performance by a North Korean girl group, that took place last July with Kim Jong Un in attendance.
Moran Hill Band, a 10-member all-girl group, raised interest because their style and appearance are flashier and more “sensational” than previous groups who tended to be more conservative in their outfits. Moran Hill Band, showed up in high heels and colorful, short dresses which are considered scandalous by North Korean standards.
Wait, it gets weirder. Some members of the group are featured playing instruments covering songs like Gonna Fly Now from the Rocky movie soundtrack and Frank Sinatra‘s My Way. The performance upped the weird ante by having people dressed as Disney characters dancing on stage, while Moran Hill performed covers of Disney songs like It’s a Small World.
I liked the fact some of the girls play their own instruments. That one girl plays a mean electric guitar. But the whole thing had me thinking I was watching a Twilight Zone bizarro episode. I’m still scratching my head over the 13 minutes of video I just watched, especially the ending.
