New York Times Gives a Less Than Stellar Review of 2NE1′s New Evolution Performance

Well, I wasn’t there, so I don’t know how accurate this take on the performance was, but apparently Jon Caramanica of the New York Times was less than impressed with 2NE1‘s performance Friday night. You can read the whole article here, but let me give you the quick overview.

While the performance was over the top, he felt it wasn’t polished and lagged in many places. His descriptions for the members went along the lines of this: CL was the “spark plug”, Dara was “coy”, Bom seemed confused the entire night, and Minzy was the “anchor”. Of course, this comes after fans learned that Bom was apparently sick that night, but how could he have known that?

As I said, I wasn’t there for the performance, so I don’t know how accurate this is, but after looking over a few of his other articles and the artists he tends to prefer (mostly male rappers with a side of Nicki Minaj), I think the NY Times could have made a better choice in who to send to review the extremely over-the-top girls of 2NE1.

Did you attend the performance? What did you think of it?

I was there, and yes the production was plagued by technical issues (mics cutting in and out, cameras for the vid screens sometimes out of focus, etc.) but I thought 2NE1 did the best they could given the situation and gave us an awesome show all the same. The problem I have with the NYT reviewer is that he seemed to know very little about K-pop in general or anything about 2NE1 in particular. A little Googling beforehand may have made all the difference to his enjoyment of the concert. But whatever, I’m used to people not understanding my K-pop obsession.

I hear similar things from other 2NE1 fans there. Some said Bom sounded awful (though I heard Bom and Minzy were sick so maybe that’s why). Yeah, the event sounded SO disorganized (there was a HUGE delay and technical issues) but judging by the fans’ reactions and the fancams I say 2NE1 did try their best to make it up for their fans in the end. Still, I really hope K-Pop comanies get their act together. Almost every time they come over here in America they eff up! Get it together! All this nonsense is starting to (if not already) become typical of K-Pop concerts now. Makes me afraid to pay to go to a K-Pop concert…
