I’m about to drop some realness on you guys.
I don’t care about T-ara. I don’t dislike them, but I don’t really like them either. I’m pretty indifferent to their existence. “Lovey Dovey” is a pretty sweet jam, and the average group member is moderate-to-exceptionally hot.
So, this whole T-ara/Hwayoung/netizen scandal all flew by as a bit of a blur to me. It occurred to me that there are probably a number of k-pop fans out there who feel the same way I do. Either you’re new to the genre or you just don’t give more than one and one half shits about T-ara and would like the Cliff’s Notes version of all these shenanigans.
Thus, I present to you…
Eun Jung: “Like how the location creates a person, a person’s will also does the same. Sigh. It’s so unfortunate. You have to know how to take care of the people around you.”
Leader SoYeon: “The difference between will + respect + consideration.”
Hyo Min and Ji Yeon: “The difference of will ^^ Let’s all work hard with will! Fighting,” and “The difference of will ^^ with common sense ^^ and always with humility ^^.”
Hwayoung: “There are times when just will is not enough. I’m a bit upset, but at the same, I’m positively taking this as a blessing from above. God, you know everything right?”
Hwayoung′s twin sister HyoYoung: “What’s the point of having a pretty face. Your heart has to be pretty. Is a sick person not even a person? I’m hurting too. I really want to cry.”
Hwayoung to her sister: “Ryu! Thank you for being by my side. I love you.” She added a photo of two hands with a matching ring… apparently hers and her sister’s.
So some of the girls are being kind of asshole-ish to Hwayoung for whatever reason. Maybe she pissed them off. Maybe the most popular boy in school has taken an interest in her. Who cares? It’s inappropriate for them to be tweeting out their anxiety about each other. Fan reactions? ”She’s an outcast!” ”They’re bullying her!” “Hwayoung is going to kill herself!”
Basically never ending pearls of wisdom. These tweets were followed by an announcement to notify us of an upcoming announcement. Yeah, makes a lot of sense.
Core Contents Media CEO Kim Kwang Soo released a statement claiming Hwayoung’s contact was to be terminated due to “staff complaints.” Basically he claimed publicly that she was a total bitch and everyone hated her so much that she had to be fired altogether. He also kindly mentioned that she’s pretty talented and will probably find work.
Yeah. Alright.
Apparently hundreds of disgruntled T-ara fans read the news of Hwayoung’s departure and instead saying “Hm, interesting,” and continuing on with their day like the rest of us, they sprung into action! They demanded T-ara’s Eunjung stop appearing on her two TV shows, canceled concert tickets, created anti-fan cafes, and even started harassing the remaining members, calling them bullies and more than likely telling them they’re useless and should kill themselves. Netizens are so productive, y’all. A Tijinyo group formed demanding an explanation and proposing a boycott of Core Contents Media. There was even a petition floating around calling for the group’s disbandment. Oh and let’s not forget the “proof” that some incredibly bored people dug up of Hwayoung being bullied.
Hwayoung: “…Facts with no truth”
Hyoyoung: “………”
Inspired, ladies. Inspired.
Core Contents Media CEO Kim Kwang Soo states that he’s open to Hwayoung returning to T-ara if she apologizes for being a huge bitch. Super likely, dude. You wrote this horrendous press release that has made everyone lose their damn minds and are now entertaining the idea of having her back? Umm… no. To add to the idiocy, two producers, one from MBC and one from SBS, came out with messages of support for Hwayoung. Later that same day? One apologized and said he was wrong, the other denied he ever made a statement about the issue at all.
Eunjung is a no-show at the premiere for a movie she is in. Soyeon is a no-show at the press conference for a drama she is in. Japan’s Kyaryy Pamyu Pamyu tweets and then deletes about T-ara. Daewoo Securities pull Eunjung’s images from their advertisements. Even “May Queen,” (the drama up against Eunjung’s “Five Fingers” in the ratings) staff refuses to get involved. These are all people or groups who know better than to get sucked into this vortex of ridiculousness.
Hwayoung writes an apology, but pretty much everyone decides as a collective that it’s total bullshit and was clearly written by someone else. Speculation of some kind of sinister meeting between Hwayoung and CCM did not help put anyone at ease about this fuckery. Although fans maybe gave her a bit too much credit by alleging that she implanted a secret DaVinci code in her apology tweet. Our friend over at Asian Junkie had a pretty legit explanation of her message.
T-ara frontwoman Eunjung wrote on her fanpage “Thank you, and I’m sorry,” which sounds like a suicide note if I’ve ever seen one. A word of advice for you Eunjung. If you’re going to be cryptic as shit, just do everyone a favor and don’t write anything at all. Let us imagine all the details in our minds. It’s way more fun for all of us.
CCM’s Kim Kwang Soo agrees to placate Tijinyo, and then sues actual media outlets for not being good at their jobs. This, to me, is absolutely asinine. Tijinyo is just a group of people who have way too much time on their hands. Why oh why would the CEO (albeit one who is terrible) of a major company waste time talking to these forever alone people? So all I have to do is start a club full of compainers and then I get the inside scoop on controversies of the day? Ugh.
Apologies all around! It seems everyone has had to apologize at least once for this giant mess. Core Contents CEO actually hand wrote his apology and then, of course, scanned it in and uploaded it to various media oulets. That looks like it was written by his assistant, but I won’t nitpick.
All in all, this entire debacle has been a bit of a headache to keep up with at all. If you have kept up with it, you have my congratulations, and also my condolences for not having anything cooler to do.
Really, my favorite commentary on everything that’s been happening is our friend Asian Junkie. You can get legitimate news and thoughtful conclusions there. And their editor-in-chief is clearly single because he has tons of time to keep track of all the details.
The AKPF Crew will be weighing in on what we think of this ongoing clusterfuck shortly. Until then, keep checking back here for the latest and greatest in K-Pop news/derp!
