I knew deep down in my soul that if I did not start with one of two groups, there would be a large group of fans hunting me down to murder me. And so, to start off, I am going to choose one of the most well-known rookie groups of this year: Exo-K.
History: While Exo-K and Exo-M debuted this year, they were announced and began releasing teasers late last year. SM came up with the idea to have two identical groups, one in Korea and one in China, to appeal to the two different countries. And already Exo has one of the larger fan bases out there. These fans call themselves “EXOtics”, though SM has yet to release an “official” fan club name. SM’s idea for Exo goes beyond just having two identical groups. No, SM actually came up with a story, which involves super powers, revolving around the two groups and can be seen in their teasers and debut song: Mama. The teasers that were released were used to show different sides and talents of all 12 Exo members, though one Exo-K member, Kai, was one of the most prominent throughout the teasers, appearing in a majority of them.
Members: Exo-K is the Korean version of Exo, and is made up of 6 members (from oldest to youngest): Suho, Baekhyun, Chanyeol, D.O., Kai, and Sehun.

Debut Song: Mama combines electronic, Rap, Hip-Hop, and even some screaming metal (or just screaming depending on whether you want to count that as metal or not) to produce a rather amazing song, not to mention a captivating Music Video. Though whether the music video is more captivating because we are trying to figure out who everyone is, what their power is, what the heck they are wearing, or what it has to do with the song is anyone’s guess. Even after saying that, I will admit that it is a music video I have watched more than once. Or twice. Or a… couple times.
Other songs: Currently Exo-K has released an album containing 6 songs: Mama, History, What is Love, Angel, Two Moons, and Machine. What is Love and Angel can be considered their slow ballads, while Mama, History, and Machine combine electronic and hip-hop to form a sound that is very unique (imho). Two Moons, on the other hand, is the group’s rap song and features Key from SHINee in the only english section of the song. I have to say that while their songs aren’t bad, this is the one that I listen to the most. I truly have no idea why.
And that’s EXO-K in a nutshell! Come back next time for another edition of ‘The Rookie List’, where I’ll pimp out some of this year’s rookie groups.
